Butterfly impersonator

A geometrid moth, the Latticed Heath (Chiasmia clathrata), flew into the house in Aeschlen. It looks like a butterfly, but you can see it is not because it lacks a 'club' at the end of the antennae. Its main host plants are Gallium spp. - and there are a lot of these in my meadow.

Mighty moth

In my garden sits a huge moth, well camouflaged against a grey stump. It is a Convolvulus Hawk Moth (Agrius convulvuli). At such a size, with a wingspan often exceeding 10 cm, it has no trouble migrating from North Africa each summer - to as far north as the Arctic Circle.
